Artist Statement

Charlotte Grayland is a multidisciplinary artist and curator living and working in Cardiff, Wales. Grayland is fascinated by the process of repeatedly deconstructing personal memories. She creates a sense of presence through absence in order to form visual patterns as well as tangible objects. These objects possess an underlying sense of memento mori, acting as props created through call and response; a conversation with a past self.

She transforms these ideas through mediums such as sculpture, sound, text, painting, video and drawing; all mediums associated with her childhood. The outcomes form rhythmic entities which can be followed in sequence. Heavily influenced by communication, her practice focuses particularly on mundane occurrence and rhythmic ideas of universal action, ultimately aiming for the facilitation of shared conversation.

She is currently Curator at BayArt, Cardiff.
